I attended a reading of a new musical at Blue Smoke. SCKBSD is a musical to put on watch, because its music and lyrics exciting and fresh are by Bruce Hornsby aka Bruce Hornsby and the Range. Remember “The Way it Is”? Hornsby won three Grammy’s and was nominated 13 times while selling 11 million records. Songs from SCKBSTD were featured on Hornsby’s 2009 CD Levitate and they are seriously terrific. The lyrics are by Hornsby and Chip deMatteo, book by Clay McLeod Chapman and the show is directed by the Tony Award-winning John Rando.

The story involves a stranger in a small town who cruises around in a Dodge, arousing suspicion and paranoia in the townsfolk. In the meantime a family falls apart as it fails to connect. What happens is a little like the Twilight Zone. The unusual title refers to his vanity license plate.

The show premiere at the Virginia Stage Company in Norfolk with Robert Cuccioli , Marcus Lovett and Jill Paice. Today at the reading it was sung by Tom Wopat and Joan Osborn (Recently her song “One of Us” was performed by the cast of Glee in the episode “Grilled Cheesus.”
